USA Flag and SWATLights, sirens and discussions of a terrorist attack Monday in Downey are merely a training exercise by federal agents, law enforcement agencies and medical personnel to prepare for the worst.

Students from local high schools will serve as volunteers for the event and play the roles of victims during the staged scenario envisioning a terrorist attack at a local high school involving shooters, hostages and multiple injuries.

“This emergency drill provides a great opportunity for our community to prepare for when an actual emergency situation arises, and it reinforces our commitment to taking an active approach towards emergency preparation,” said Downey Mayor Roger Brossmer.

The all-day emergency drill training is taking place at Downey Studios from approximately 6 a.m. to 3 p.m. in a collaborative effort to help prepare for a real emergency, Downey officials said.

Agencies involved include the FBI, the L.A. County Sheriff’s Department, the Los Angeles Police Department, L.A. County Fire Department, Raytheon, Kaiser, Downey Regional Medical Center, Americare and Downey’s city and fire departments.
