In case you missed seeing this live…
LAPD officers chase a suspect in Compton, California on May 21, 2012. The dangerous high speed pursuit continues as the suspect crashes into multiple parked cars. The suspect has a head on collision with a police car, jumps out and takes off running. Police officers tackle the suspect and take him into custody.
28-year-old Compton resident Michael Mariano was booked on felony DUI. Mariano, who is on parole for an unknown conviction, is being held on $100,000 bail.
According to LAPD Commander Andrew Smith, officers saw Mariano “driving erratically” and tried to pull him over. They chased him for a while, called in a helicopter for overhead pursuit, and eventually caught up with Mariano in Compton–after he crashed into a police car and then tried to flee by foot.
In the video, you can see officers tackle Mariano and forcibly restrain him. Smith said the incident will be investigated, just like every time officers use force of any kind.
“He certainly put the community in danger by driving like some kind of maniac through the streets of Los Angeles and then into Compton,” Smith said, praising the Southeast Division officers who stuck with the suspect.
One officer was taken to the hospital with a cut on his forehead, another was treated and released for a hurt arm.
Full property damage estimates were not immediately available, but Smith said a police car was likely totaled in the collision that eventually stopped Mariano, and other cars appeared to have been damaged by the suspect.
